Summary

Section 4 details the prices of and expenditures on various energy products consumed in the state. Arkansas is ranked 33rd in the nation for energy expenditures in 2004 and 18th in energy expenditures per person. Energy expenditures per capita in Arkansas track close to the national average although the gap has widened a little since the 90s. Since 2002, energy expenditures have risen to meet levels reached during the energy crisis in the 70s. In 2004, the price of energy in Arkansas was 39th highest in the nation and below the national average.

Residential customers account for 86 percent of retail electric utility customers and 48 percent of their revenue. A similar scenario is seen in the natural gas sector as residential customers provide 54 percent of natural gas revenue.

In 2004, Arkansas was ranked 27th highest for the price of natural gas and 21st highest for the price of petroleum. Meanwhile, Arkansas ranked 30th in natural gas expenditures and 33rd in petroleum expenditures.
