Notes:

-Motor vehicle statistics include private, commercial, and publicly owned automobiles, buses, and trucks. Fuel consumption statistics include private, commercial, and public sector consumption on highway and non-highway use.

-Fuel consumed is made up of total gasoline use and private and commercial highway use of special fuels (special fuel is primarily diesel and small amounts of liquefied petroleum gases).

-Motor vehicle statistics are taken from the number of vehicle registrations. Certain numbers in the above chart may vary slightly from U.S. Department of Transportation data as a result of variances in population data.

-Non highway gasoline is that used by agriculture, aviation (excluding aviation jet fuel), industrial, commercial, construction and marine sectors. Reporting for this fuel is variable on a national basis due to differences in how states handle exemptions or refunds for this fuel.

The table compares travel statistics for the state to those of the nation as a whole. While Arkansas has slightly 14 percent fewer vehicles per capita than the national average (20 percent fewer vehicles per licensed drivers), Arkansans travel 33 percent more miles per registered vehicles and get slightly 8 percent worse gas mileage than the U. S. average.
