Summary: Energy Consumption Sectors

Section 2 of this report provides detailed information about Arkansas's energy consumption in different economic sectors. The economic sectors which will be discussed are residential, commercial, industrial, transportation, and electric power.

Between 2003 and 2004, energy consumption in the residential and commercial sectors decreased by 1.2 percent and 0.8 percent respectively. During the same time period, energy consumption in the industrial, transportation and electric power sectors increased by 0.2 percent, 2.1 percent and 2.9 percent respectively.

Traditionally, the industrial and transportation sectors make for the bulk of energy consumption in the state. In 2004, Arkansas's industrial sector consumed about 42 percent of the total energy consumed in the state and the transportation sector consumed about 25 percent. Since the late 90s the industrial sector's consumption of natural gas has decreased while electric power and petroleum consumption have increased consistently. Electric power and petroleum accounted for 42 percent of the energy consumed in the industrial sector.

Although gasoline prices have increased over the last few years, usage of gasoline has remained on a steady upward incline in the transportation sector. The transportation sector accounted for 72 percent of petroleum consumption while the industrial sector used 23 percent
